Excerpts from

'New Thought and Environmental Stewardship'

Where I begin is with the need inside every person to reconnect with our original feeling of biophilia, which means our connection to and love of all living things.

My belief is that you must have an emotional, tactile and feeling connection to Nature or else all of this discussion of stewardship is intellectual. Therefore it also is impersonal e.g. I can push it away. Ralph Waldo Emerson, one of the grandparents of New Thought, puts it this way,

"The problem of restoring to the world original and eternal beauty is solved by the redemption of the soul. The ruin or the blank that we see when we look at nature, is in our own eye. The reason why the world lacks unity, and lies broken and in heaps, is because man is disunited with himself. He cannot be a naturalist until he satisfies all the demands of the spirit."

I am exploring with you my own unresolved questions: the disparity between the New Thought beliefs that are really working in my life and the appearance of a decline in the natural world.

But what about the collective consciousness and what we appear, according to Al Gore and the scientific community, to have powerfully co-created in melting ice caps, diminishing resources and an increasing global experience of deprivation…

Will we use up the world as we know it? Or can we overcome this collective vision of lack through the power of our belief in transformation and connection?  The answer of course is yes. Do we have the will?

The goal is perhaps to look at environmental stewardship as an opportunity to experience an emergent property.  Perhaps it is the acceptance of our experience on Earth as Nature that matters most to deepen our experience of biophilia and connection to all Life. To strive for a faith where there is no gap between you and Spirit. In that place of complete connection and flow is where the opportunity for transformation lies. See yourself as an environmentalist – the kind who holds a vision of wholeness and possibility for the planet.

It's my opinion that we (speaking to myself) need to start affirming global balance, not fight against global warming. Al Gore and the scientists are right, but we can not affirm global warming. Only global balance.

Take my Global Balance image and stick it on your treasure map and find a picture of the most intimate, exquisite experience of Nature to you. Put that on your treasure map as a symbol of biophilia and connectedness – because there is no deeper connection than the one we have with the Earth.

Deepak Chopra said,

"Consciousness knows what is to come, and it builds into every particle of creation the potential not just for one unfolding future, but for any future. Nature doesn't have to predict what is going to happen on every level. It just opens avenues of growth, and then a given creature – in this case us -- makes the leap when the time feels right. As long as potential is alive, the future can evolve by choice."

To contribute to the Earth's health and wholeness, put your visioning skills and the law of attraction to work. This is a big collective job for those of us in New Thought.  It requires clarity of intention, spiritual discipline and the complete faith in our connection to all living things. We are Nature and Nature is Spirit.
